Schuetzen Information
Many types of matches are fired at these meetings, both bench-rest
and offhand. Squadding, however, is informal; you register for the
matches you want to participate in and then participate in them
on any relay. Relays are typically 45 minutes, with a l5 minute
interval to change targets. Rifles, under the rules of ASSRA, are
limited to single-shot, non-bolt action rifles firing lead bullets
with no jackets or gas-checks. There are special classes for .22rf
single-shot rifles, as well as for rifles of .40 cal and above.
"Fixed" ammunition can be used, but most participants
seat the bullet in the barrel and then chamber a charged cartridge
behind it. Both Iron Sight and Scope Sight scores are recognized,
but courses of fire limited to Iron Sights are usually only encountered
at the several National Matches. Any safe blackpowder or smokeless
charge is allowed, but blackpowder is seldom seen. The target used
is the ASSRA-sanctioned 25-ring target. On the 200 yd target, the
center ring is l.5", and each succeeding ring is 3/4"
further out. The "black" is l2" for the Iron Sight
Target, and 6" for the Scope Sight Target. For shorter ranges
(.22rf is often fired at l00 yd), the targets are reduced proportionally.
Some of the events typically offered are:
l0 shots Offhand, re-entry 10-shots Benchrest
for score, re-entry
5 shots Benchrest for group, re-entry
l0 shots X-sticks, Sitting (for +.40 cal rifles)
Various traditional novelty targets, including classic picture
targets
Entry fees are nominal. Usually a range fee, which might be $l0/day,
plus a match fee of about $l/target. Cash prizes are usually given
in each event, the amount depending on the number of entries. Since
these matches are traditionally social occasions, visitors are welcomed
and can usually borrow equipment and try their hand. A light lunch
will probably be available on the range. For specific information,

single-shot rifle matches.
Equipment: Any non-bolt action single-shot rifle using
plain-base lead bullets. Any sights for .22 rf and Schuetzen
rifles, iron sights for .40 cal and up.
Courses of Fire: Usual ASSRA Benchrest and Offhand
matches in the categories of Center-fire, Rim-fire, and Big-bore,
as well as sitting from X-sticks for Big-bore (.40 cal and
larger). All matches are fired at 200 yd, with the exception
that at Thurmont, the Rim-fire is fired at 100 yd.
Relays and Squadding: Any of the matches may be fired
on any relay at any time. 45 minute relays will begin ca.
9AM and continue through the day. Range facilities have thus
far been adequate to accommodate all comers, but in the event
of a large turnout, it may become necessary to sit out an
occasional relay.
Facilities: The range has a covered, paved firing
point with 14 shooting benches. A lunch will be served on
the range. Camping is available at the range, but inquire
in advance.
