Who needs to take the WCHP/CCW/WCHP training?
Every original application and renewal application submitted after October 1, 2013, unless exempt. If you are any one of the below you are exempt​.
- You are an active law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency of the United States, the State or any local law enforcement agency in the State.
- You are a retired law enforcement officer with a law enforcement agency of the United States, the State or any local law enforcement agency in the State.
- You are an active, retired, or honorably discharged member of the armed forces of the United States or the National Guard. You must have your DD-214 if not active or retired.
- You are a Qualified Handgun Instructor registered with the Maryland State Police.
- You have successfully completed a 16 hour WCHP firearms training course (initial application) or 8 Hour WCHP firearms training course (renewal application) given by a Qualified Handgun Instructor within the last 2 years and have a form MSP 29-14 Certified Qualification Score Sheet. (NO on-line firearm safety course or on-line WCHP/WCHP/CCW will be accepted, no matter what a website may tell you. Only IN PERSON training with a live fire component is acceptable.)
Regardless of the exemptions, we highly encourage you to take the initial WCHP/CCW course to familiarize yoursaelf with issues, current laws, self training, and other factors to concider before you start practicing your 2A rights.
